Name: Emily Sachs
Title: Display Horticulturist
Educational background:
Master’s degree in Landscape Architecture from Chatham University
Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts from Edinboro University
Primary role at the Garden: Building, maintaining, and designing the cultivated areas of the garden
How did you start in this career (or transition from another career): After finishing my undergraduate degree, I worked in an office for many years before going back to school for Landscape Architecture. I was interested in furthering my education in art and design, but also working with plants and nature. After finishing this degree, I got a job working here at the garden seasonally and it turned out to be a good fit for me.
What you love most about your job: I love being outside and I love landscape design. I am especially interested in aesthetic pruning and learning about the Japanese style of gardening. I get the most excited about the creative aspects of my job and the variety of work I get to do. The field of horticulture is broad and changing, so there is always something new and interesting to learn.
What do you like to do when you are not at work (hobby or other): When I am not in some garden or another, I enjoy hiking, knitting, and other fiber arts. I love going to museums, especially smaller and more offbeat ones. On weekends I often take short trips with my friends and partner.
Who inspired you to pursue this line of work? I have been lucky to have worked with so many interesting and inspiring people that have all taught me different things.
