Join community herbalist, essayist, and poet, Sarah S. Velázquez, on a mindful walk in the carefully stewarded land of Pittsburgh Botanic Garden. This second session will be like the July session, but we will explore new plants. We will take our time with the fauna and flora we stumble upon and will utilize their beauty and candor, along with writing prompts, to generate original pieces of writing (of any genre). Sit by a tree and write their story. Listen to a reading while you put your feet into the grass and find their roots. Love on a flower and write her love story. This workshop is not for only nature writers but also for nature-loving writers and any creator that appreciates the gifts of life.

Speaker

  • Sarah Samms Velázquez

Sarah Samms Velázquez, CRM, PWS, is a community herbalist, essayist, and poet who destigmatizes the human experience, one story at a time. Sarah’s work has appeared in literary & news magazines across the country including NBAP Literary Magazine, Public Source, and Pathos Literary Magazine. Sarah has worn several editorial hats but prefers to be lost in the throes of messy beginnings.

Sarah is the founder of The Medicine House, a community herbalism movement and aspiring urban herbal farm in Northern Appalachia. She further serves her community by teaching creative writing in Recovery Centers to the formerly incarcerated and manages its programs at Write Pittsburgh. Sarah is also an avid hiker, a traveler of society’s underbelly, a music nerd, and an art dabbler.

Write Pittsburgh is a nonprofit dedicated to helping people tell their stories. We offer creative writing, storytelling, and arts-based programs for teens, adults, and individuals in community, recovery, and transitional spaces across Allegheny County.
