Dig returns this year with a fresh group of some of Pittsburgh’s finest jazz talents!
Get ready to move and groove to the tunes of the George Heid III Trio, accompanied by vocalists Chantal Joseph, Grace Elliott and Maria Becoates-Bey. This dynamic group of musicians have performed extensively in both the local Pittsburgh jazz scene and toured across the country and abroad.

Pittsburgh Botanic Garden members may purchase member presale tickets starting Monday, April 22. Tickets will go on sale to the public on Wednesday, May 1.

Meet the Musicians:
Chantal Joseph
With experience ranging from musical theater, studio recording, songwriting, production, vocal coaching and education, Chantal Joseph can do it all. She is a voice and piano instructor at the Afro-American Music Institute and head of the music department at the Sister Thea Bowman private academy.
Maria Becoates-Bey
Maria is a Pittsburgh native and theatre arts alumni from Point Park University. Her credits include commercials, film, and theatrical performances at the City Theatre, Pittsburgh Musical Theatre, the Civic Light Opera, and various theater companies. She is currently a singer performing at corporate and private events locally and around the country.
Grace Elliott
A vocalist and songwriter born and raised in Pittsburgh, Grace graduated from North Allegheny and attended the Frost School of Music for Vocal Jazz Performance. She is currently a full-time musician performing in Pittsburgh and working on original music.
George Heid III
George grew up in his father’s recording studio and began playing drums and piano at age 3. His early studies were at the Afro-American Music Institute, followed by Pittsburgh’s Creative & Performing Arts School and State University of New York: Purchase. He has recorded with numerous world-class musicians, and toured extensively across the United States and China.
Dwayne Dolphin
A mainstay of the Pittsburgh jazz scene, Dwayne has worked with Pittsburgh greats such as Roger Humphries, Pete Henderson and Carl Arter. He has also recorded a who’s-who of acclaimed artists over the years.
Daniel May
Daniel studied music composition at the University of Connecticut, then received his master’s from Cornell. He later earned a Doctorate of Musical Arts as a composer for feature films and has collaborated with world-class acts such as George Harrison, Sting, Lindsay Buckingham and The Moody Blues. He is also a long-time jazz pianist and has recorded and produced over 50 CD projects.

Celebrate the blooming of the Garden’s Flowering dogwood (Cornus florida) trees! As the season changes and temperatures rise, these fascinating native trees display brilliant white blooms throughout the Garden. Pittsburgh Botanic Garden has over 500 catalogued specimens across our 65 acres, with a prominent stand along the Margaret Lawrence Simon Dogwood Meadow.
During Dogwood Days, enhance your visit with interactive activities, drop-in programming and more. Many are included with regular daily admission, but registration may be required. Pittsburgh Botanic Garden members may visit and attend most drop-in programming for free!

Sunday, April 21 – Tai Chi Qigong in the Dogwoods
Learn about Tai Chi and Qigong under the native stand of flowering dogwoods near Margaret Lawrence Simon Dogwood Meadow. Free with admission, but registration in advance is required.
Sunday, April 21 – Therapy Dogs by the Dogwoods
Meet different therapy dogs and learn about how they are able to assist people! Dogs and their handlers will be near the Highmark gazebo from 10-11am and 3-4pm. Advance registration is not required.
Tuesday, April 23 – Drop-In Story Time & Crafts
Make flowering dogwood crafts and read a garden-inspired story at the Highmark gazebo near Margaret Lawrence Simon Dogwood Meadow! Join us from 11am-12pm, advance registration is not required.
Wednesday, April 24 – Native Trees & Shrubs for the PA Landscape
Join Education & Exhibits Director, Dr. Mark Miller, to learn about the fascinating different plants that thrive in western Pennsylvania gardens! This is a paid program, advance registration is required.
Thursday, April 25 – Drop-In Story Time & Crafts
Make flowering dogwood crafts and read a garden-inspired story at the Highmark gazebo near Margaret Lawrence Simon Dogwood Meadow! Join us from 11am-12pm, advance registration is not required.
Friday, April 26 – Tree-Related Arts & Crafts
1-3pm: Drop-in, tree-related arts and crafts with information about the Flowering dogwood (Cornus florida) at Weisbrod Learning Pavilion. Free with admission!
Friday, April 26 – Guided Tree Tours
1:30-3pm: Guided tree tours with master naturalist Judy Bonnaure. Free with admission, but registration in advance is required.
Friday, April 26 – Screening of Cathedral: The Fight to Save the Ancient Hemlocks of Cook Forest

10am-12:15pm: Learn the Japanese practice shinrin-yoku, or forest bathing, to utilize all of your senses to take in all of nature’s healing benefits. Free with admission, but registration in advance is required.
Saturday, April 27 – Drop-In Textile Art & Dogwood Crafts
12-2pm: Use recycled fabric scraps alongside dogwood-themed information and activities. Free with admission, advance registration is not required.
