Name: Colleen Chorney
Title: Events and Guest Relations Director
Educational background:
Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Elementary Education
Community College of Allegheny County, Business Management
Primary role at the Garden: I oversee guest relations though Admissions, the Garden Gift Shop and Events department.
How did you start in this career (or transition from another career): I consider myself fortunate to have found my niche early on. Planning and entertaining have always come natural to me. So, in retrospect my passion has become my career. 30 years as a professional in the hospitality industry, I have grown tremendously, and my enthusiasm remains as strong as ever. Each event I aspire to inspire. Pulling together the logistical aspects, the creativity in keeping each event unique, and the emotion that comes with each event takes an incredible team and strong leadership. My career began working in private city clubs. I quickly became accustomed to upscale dining and delightful wines. I found myself working among some of the best in the Hospitality business. There is no substitution for high standards. Cuisine, atmosphere, ambiance and a touch of decadence is a winning combination for an exceptional guest experience. I think my strongest suit is attention to detail. The small touches thrill me, and I know they are important to my guest as well. I love what I do, and I hope it shows.
What you love most about your job: I love the high energy environment! Trying new approaches and creating unforgettable moments, in fresh ways takes a lot of pivoting. My favorite aspects, is mentoring and working with my staff and creating a dynamic team.
Interesting anecdote or fun fact about your job: The 2009 G20 Pittsburgh Summit brought heads of state and heads of government to our wonderful city to discuss the world’s economy. I was working at a premier venue in the city at the time. We were incredibly involved with the event; my role was to greet the world leaders and spouses as they entered the building. It was exciting, impressive and a bit intimidating to be honest. In the middle of the room stood Michelle Obama holding her high heels in her hand. Her feet hurt so she took them off. The gesture reminded me we are all human; hard work is hard work.
What do you like to do when you are not at work (hobby or other): I spend a good deal of my time with my three boys. We are avid Steeler and Pen fans. Walking and hiking with friends is a favorite activity, but sometimes a moment of solitude doing yoga or meditation is in order. On the more adventurous side I love travel. My sister is the best travel companion.
Who inspired you to pursue this line of work? Jack Kimbell, Rivers Club General Manager. Jack is unique. When I started down this path 30+ years ago, I saw Jack as a forward thinker. He surrounds himself with the talented people. Our staff, at the Rivers Club, was like family. Jack had a remarkable way for caring for others. That always stuck with me about Jack. Yes, he is a very good mentor.
